Thought:

The Coast Guard is expected to be the most skilled water rescue organization in the world. They are the best trained, the most experienced, and the most capable rescuers. But how good would they be if they didn’t know how to command their vessels or didn’t know how to rescue anyone, or even how to swim?

To be serviceable shepherds, we have to know how to do the job. That’s why we not only have to learn our duty, but we have to learn to do it well. We have to practice. We have to become good at what we do. The better we are, the more useful we’ll be in coming to the rescue. The Lord needs great rescuers, not just in title, but in skill. And the best way to get better is to get out there and start doing the work. You’ll be able to practice perfectly soon enough, but you can’t get very far until you take your first steps. Perfection can be the long-term goal, but only after you begin. Learn to be good at what you can do, then use those skills to save others.

Invitation:

Identify 3-5 areas where you show great aptitude and skill that can be used to rescue others. Maybe your love and knowledge of animals, art, history, current events, finance, sports or rubix cubes, or cooking, or anything else where you are passionate and experienced. Then, explore and list the ways that those skills can help you reach the one and go to their rescue. Pick one way that you can make that happen this week and act on it.
