“Love One Another as He Has Loved Us.” Elder Jose L. Alonso CR 10/2017

Thought:

John the Apostle reminded us that “God is Love.” We learn that the two great commandments are to love God and to love our neighbor as ourselves. We are also taught that if we love Jesus, we’ll keep his commandments.  Love is a big deal to God because it is a reflection of what is in and on our hearts.  Love well.  Work on it. Cultivate it. Grow it. You’re going to need all that you can get your hands on in the days to come.

Misc:

Philia: Brotherly love (Philadelphia: City of brotherly love)

Agape: Godly love, loving everyone, selfless love (used in Matt 22: 26-40)

Eros: Sexual passion (most dangerous according to the Greeks)

Ludus: Playful love, flirting

Pragma: Longstanding love, the continued effort of loving someone after eros wears off

Philautia: Self-love. It could lead one to narcissistic actions, or it could lead to positive self-talk (the opposite of self-loathing). Aristotle put it, “All friendly feelings for others are an extension of a man’s feelings for himself.”

Invitation:

Review the definition of Agape–Godly love. List 10-15 attributes/characteristics of Godly love and then identify 2-3 that you could work on. Pick one and spend a week working on it. Record in your journal what you discovered.
