Week 15- “A Peculiar People”
Scriptures:
1 Pet 2:9
Titus 2
General Conference Address:
“Followers of Christ” Elder Dallin H Oaks CR 4/2013
“Dare to Stand Alone” Pres Thomas S Monson CR 10/11
Thought:
Why would the Lord want a peculiar people? Does he just want his followers to feel like they are “strange, odd, or unusual” (Google definition)? That just doesn’t seem consistent with him wanting what is best for us. So what then of becoming a peculiar people? Perhaps some alternative synonyms for peculiar will help us understand better. “Curious, atypical, different, exceptional, rare, extraordinary, remarkable, uncommon, unconventional.” If we use these words to define “peculiar”, perhaps the wisdom of the Lord starts to come into focus. What if, as times get darker and darker and the path less and less clear, what if then, our peculiarities become a beacon to those around us? What if that is how he makes it easier for his lost children to find their way home? Don’t be ashamed when you feel a little odd about how you look or feel when you’re doing the Lord’s will and it makes you stand out. Perhaps that’s exactly what he wants and exactly what the world needs!
Misc:
We must be “steadfast and immovable” (Mosiah 5:15), as steady as a mooring in a storm. If we attach ourselves to the Savior, we will be as steadfast as he is and that is exactly what the pure in heart will want and what all will need in the stormy days to come.
Invitation:
Speak freely and naturally about your religious life to those with whom you associate. You don’t need everyone to like what you like or believe what you believe, but who you are, what you do and do not do, and how you act will influence those around you, so be a beacon. Be a safe harbor. Be a rock and share your light.
