Thought:
An airplane is a man-made marvel. It can carry thousands of pounds of people and payload over hundreds of miles, over and over and over again, with what appears to be relative ease. But it is subject to the laws of aerodynamics—every time. No matter how powerful the engines or how well designed the wings, if you pull up too fast, you’ll stall out and lose all ability to fly. If you go too slow, you’ll lose lift and the ability to fly, or never even leave the ground. If you accumulate ice on the wings, you’ll create excess drag and could stall and lose lift. If you experience vertigo and fail to trust your instruments, you could fly upside down right into the terrain. These conditions, along with a thousand others, can cause a perfect airplane to crash. We are like airplanes. We are given conditions under which we can operate with amazing precision, speed, and power. We can carry heavy loads and be unmistakably reliable. But if we fail to heed the guidelines we’ve been given, we can crash and burn. Every person is at risk of falling. In fact, we’re in a fallen state, trying to get back on the path. Commandments can feel restrictive, but they keep us in flight, so to speak. They also prevent us from being deceived. When we know how revelation works and choose to receive the Holy Ghost, we can avoid being fooled by false impressions, impostors, and adversaries. If we fail to trust our instruments, we can crash and burn. Commandments are meant to keep us safe and effective. They’re not designed just to annoy or bother. Identify a rule or commandment that bothers you the most. Look into it. Why might it exist? What is it doing to keep you out of trouble, on the right path, or safely “in flight”? Seek to find out more about it. Share your conclusions in a journal or with someone.
