Thought:

The pattern of receiving revelation in the scriptures requires one to “seek revelation”.  Find someone or something that needs to be helped or done and then study it out, wrestle with it, test it, play it out in your mind, etc, and THEN ASK!  The pattern is not to wait for revelation to attack us.  Why?  Perhaps because that kind of revelation won’t build faith.  The pattern described earlier will.  Another pattern we see is that revelation usually comes to those who intend to act on what they learn or who are already on the move.  It’s hard for the Lord to steer a parked car! Again, action is what builds faith.  Seeking revelation only with the plan to keep it to yourself and not use it to make yourself or someone else better or more aligned with gospel principles won’t get you very far.  Show the Lord that he can trust you.  Write down what you learn, ask for more if it’s out there, and act on what you learn.

Misc:

“There is a lesson to be learned from the study of the Doctrine and Covenants. Revelations are generally answers to questions. The Lord did not come and tap Joseph on the shoulder and say, ‘I have a revelation for you.’ But instead Joseph went to the Lord and asked to receive an answer. Time after time, Joseph tells us how he would ask and how, in response, the revelation would come. Elder Russell Nelson recently expanded on this important principle. He said, ‘The Lord can only teach an inquiring mind’” (M. Russell Ballard, “What Came from Kirtland” [Brigham Young University fireside, Nov. 6, 1994], 8, speeches.byu.edu).

What potential barriers might be keeping you from receiving revelation today?

Invitation:

The next time you need an answer to prayers, begin asking, seeking, and knocking.  Find a way to act, even in little ways.  Take a small step and then another and watch as the Lord lights the way.
