Thought:

Have you ever asked why the Lord wants us to be self-reliant?  Why does he even care when he can provide everything for everyone if he wants to?  Have you ever considered that self-reliance may be a mentality more than a collection of things? A person who pays the price to be self-reliant changes their heart and mind and becomes better qualified to help others.  Even if they were to lose all that they had amassed, they would just start again and get it all back.  It happened with so many pioneers. Even Job seemed to have it all together and was in a great place when the Lord tried him.  It took 40 chapters for Job to lose it all, deal with the fallout, and then get it all back.  He had it better in the end than he had it before.  Butt’s not about things, it’s about the heart.  The rich young ruler in the New Testament had the same problem.  Amassing wealth isn’t the goal.  Becoming more and more like the Savior and our Father is the goal. Subduing your ego, sacrificing and caring for others, and submitting to God’s will are important steps on that path.  When we’re not self-reliant, we worry, fret, make hasty decisions, and can have lots of regret. The quicker we become self-reliant, the sooner we can stop worrying about ourselves and start helping and serving others.
